If you are a brave soul, EXIFTool is your best bet. Don't worry about the late of the last EXIFToolGUI release. The best tools are EXIFTool and EXIFToolGUI. I can't see dragon's den (sharktank?) getting excited about it though.

An all in one approach would mean 1 new software learning curve instead of what looks like a minimum of 3, possibly 4, separate tools, and I think would help with consistency, explorer views etc. Though video, photo, music and documents need different fields, managing metadata is essentially the same whatever the file type. I do think it is a shame there does not appear to be anything out there designed to handle metadata for all file types. Re the music files metadata, does anybody know of a tool that will scan files for bpm and/or key (if mp3tag doesn't - I haven't fully explored it yet)? BPM detection is a relatively routine inclusion in music production and mixing software, so the tech is out there, and in certain music genres there would be many advantages to having that info hardwired into the file data. Most of my own images have the camera exif already, so it is this human edit i need to make as easy as possible. Thanks everybody, some great tools here including one on MaloK's google list i hadn't come across - metadata++ - which is the winner for my particular purpose as it is the only one i have found that allows you to view an entire folder of thumbnails - something that will make visual tagging of subject matter, style, location etc, massively quicker and more consistent.
